Huge congrats to our second Guild of the Month, the Wildfire Riders of Feathermoon. We combed through all of the entries sent to us over the last 30 days, and the Wildfire Riders came out on top — not only do they run some exemplary raids, but they are a shining example of fun and interesting RP, and we really enjoyed their one loot rule, too. Read on after the break to find out what it is, and what kind of people make up April’s Guild of the Month.
In addition to being featured right here on the site, Wildfire Riders also picks up a raid pack from the good folks at Swagdog.com, who offer hats and t-shirts custom printed with your guild and character information — the perfect piece of clothing to pack up for BlizzCon later this year. And speaking of BlizzCon, Swagdog tells us that they’re going to be there yet again (last year they were giving away custom mousepads), and that they’ve got some more customized guild gear in the works, so stay tuned. Thanks to them for helping us sponsor this contest — go head over to their site now to make your own custom guild shirt

Double Bubble has a good little writeup on a pretty useful WoW-related iPhone application. But instead of the MMO, this app centers on another game in the WoW universe: the Trading Card Game. WoW Lifecounter (iTunes link) is a utility that will (you guessed it) count your life points as you play the TCG — it tracks both sides’ heroes, and you can take away or give life points with just the touch of a button. It’s pretty simple — all you do is punch in the starting health of each character, and then the app will even track wins for each side. Usually, you can just track the points with a pen and paper, but if you don’t want to bother doing math in the heat of a battle, the app can be fun to use.
It’s 99 cents, which might stop the cheap among you from picking it up — we won’t blame you if you’d just rather have a Junior Bacon Chee and write things down. But if you play the WoW TCG a lot and always have your iPhone with you, it’s probably worth the investment.

So the Holiday Rush is finally over, with both Children’s Week and Noblegarden out of the way, it’s a bit quieter in Azeroth. In fact, some of us are starting to think they may be a problem: It’s just too damn quiet. Northrend just doesn’t have that much ambiance after a while.
Still, even if the landscape of Northrend is starting to look somewhat sterile, there’s still buzzing going on in the background, at least. Patch 3.1.2 remains on the PTR and even has some updated notes, There’s a Murloc Marine on the loose, the first round of tickets for BlizzCon will be released in scant days, and we have a plethora of interesting pets and mounts showing up in the game files. Downtime today is 3 AM to 11 AM Pacific, and some servers will be down even longer, so you’ll have plenty time to read up on all this and more. Curl up in your WoW Pod and check our usual tuesday morning roundup after the break.

Kauro of <Brutal Death> on Crushridge writes, “I was flying around on my druid one day looking for lowbies to gank when I came across the needle thing floating above the Mooncrest Gardens. (I think that’s what they’re called.) I found out that there’s an invisible barrier surrounding the rotating thing on the edge of the platform and stood on it for some fun, dancing tauren excitement! That’s not the Arcanomicron! IT’S APOCOTAUREN!” Personally, I think this is reiteration of an important lesson we all learned from Dr. Egon Spengler: don’t cross the streams. You never know what’s going to come out.

This picture from Xaveine on Shadow Council begs the question whether the scariest thing in Naxxramas is a big purple lich, or a big, purple Draenei in a bigger purple suit? Xaveine’s outfit in this shot is a culmination of Wrath of the Lich King wardrobes, but I like to think the contrasting green sludge in the background really sets off his eyes.

The patch notes for the 3.1 PTR have recently been updated, and they have quite a few nice updates and a few things that should make things more convenient for cooks everywhere. We were promised cooking would be easier in 3.1, and these patch notes definitely deliver on that promise. Let’s check out the changes (compiled courtesy of MMO-Champion), which include even easier campfires and those 2 promised recipes:
* A new recipe has been added to cooking trainers for making Black Jelly, using several Borean Man ‘O War as ingredients. While it looks disgusting, it restores more health and mana than the highest level food.* Flint and Tinder is no longer necessary for creating a campfire. You’re just that resourceful!* Ingredients such as Spices, Apples, and the like have been removed from most cooking recipes.* Players no longer need to complete the Clamlette Surprise quest to gain Artisan cooking. The quest now offers the unique recipe, Clamlette Magnifique. If you already completed the quest, you can visit Dirge Quickcleave in Gadgetzan to learn this recipe (for free).* Several

Zarhym has got some answers to the widespread problem of lag in Wintergrasp after patch 3.1 the other week. He says Blizzard figures the problem is simply population based — there are many more people playing in the battleground than there were before the patch. For that reason, they’re having trouble coming up with good solutions: the battleground is designed to be non-instanced, and that’s why a lot of people like it, so putting a limit on the amount of people in there is not the way to go. Hardware isn’t a solution either — Blizzard’s hardware is already top-of-the-line, and not only would upgrading it take a while anyway, but my guess is that most of the lag issues come not from Blizzard’s side, but from the connections between players and them, which they may not have any control over anyway.
So yes, we’re more or less out of luck — as long as Wintergrasp is extremely popular (and even Zarhym remembers the naysayers before the release with a smirk), there will always be a certain amount of lag in there. There are a few good suggestions

Sometimes you’d like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all MMOs, including WoW! Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world.
Champions Online Press NDA lifts: See our impressions
This last weekend, press had the opportunity to spend my time within the Champions Online beta. After playing more than I would safely recommend, I bring you my personal takeaway in an effort to get out as much crunchy information wow goldgoodness on the upcoming MMO as possible.
Five free to play MMOs that are ahead of the class
Times are tough, the wallet is tight, and you still need a game to play. But what free games can you wrap your hands around that just don’t suck, right? That seems to be the trouble with free to play games — many selections all with very low quality. But the market is not as bad as you might think. There are certainly some gems out there in the free to play market, just waiting for you to wrap your hands around them and play. Finding them however,

It’s Monday morning at eight o’clock in the ae-em. Do you know where your kids are?
Mine is safely wrapped up next to me sitting at the inn off the bank in Dalaran.
How’s the whole Children’s Week thing going for you? I’ve gotten all the achievements done with the exception of School of Hard Knocks. It seems that no matter what battleground I go in there is always someone willing to not play by the rules the rest of the team agreed to and jump in front of folks to get the achievements, or the battleground resemble what Jon Stewart might call a “cluster of fun to the flag.”
I’m hopeful that this is just the behavior of less mature folks unable to follow rule #1, and that these things get better during the day time hours of WoW. Usually I find that the people who are on at eleven in the morning are more mature than the average player, and that means a better experience for myself and everyone.
The other interesting thing I’ve encountered is Home Alone stacking. Each time they’d use their Hearthstone, they’d get the achievement and the
